Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: part 1 (original title in English: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 ) is a fantasy filmand action directed by David Yates. It is the first episode of the seventh film of Harry Potter, based on the novel by JK Rowling.
I've loved every film. While the first two chapters lumber about quite a bit, they're still thoroughly enjoyable introductions to the series, and faithful adaptations that set the tone for the rest of the franchise. But Potter got a lot more interesting when Warner started experimenting with directors, bringing on edgy filmmakers who carved out their own take on the series.
Then Warner hired relative newcomer David Yates for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and he's stuck with the franchise – seeing it through 'til the end. What's interesting about Yates is how much different each of his Potter films looks and feels. Phoenix has a very sharp, witty style to it – similar to Prisoner of Azkaban. Whereas Half-Blood Prince is a moodier, atmospheric tale, complete with soft, inky Oscar-nominated cinematography. But nothing in this franchise really compares to. There's such a sense of emotional intensity with this film, right from the exciting, moody opening moments all the way up to the tragic, heartbreaking finale. The performances are sharper, especially our three leads (, and ).
The story is more frightening and intense. And the visuals are far more stark and isolated – creating a true sense of fear and dread for things to come. While the previous Potter films were all terrific in their own way, Potter 7.1 is the most rounded, dynamically engaging film in the series. Even the camping trip subplot – a bane for many Potter readers – is nuanced and brilliantly crafted. For the first time in this franchise, the stakes feel genuinely high, and very real. And I can't even begin to imagine how powerful and emotionally rewarding Harry Potter's final journey will be.

Bring on Part 2! It's no secret that Warner has largely phoned-in the home video releases of Harry Potter, especially on Blu-ray. For some reason, they treat this multi-billion dollar franchise like it's the Cat and Dogs series instead of the bona fide classic that it is. Even the more expansive Ultimate Edition box sets pale in comparison to the Lord of the Rings trilogy box set, or the Alien box set. And their last release, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was a downright embarrassment.
With a transfer that was only a few gigs larger than a dual-layered DVD, heavy compression filled the screen, forcing an ugly viewing experience. But it seems Warner has finally listened to the critics and fans who've long complained about how they've treated this franchise on home video.
Harry Potter 7.1 looks and sounds better than any previously released Potter film. This is a reference experience complete with a stark, vivid 1080p/AVC transfer and a rousing 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The image is absolutely perfect.
Black levels are a touch dark, but consistent and striking. Depth, details, shadows and textures are bolder, with more nuance and style than any previous film. And the encode yields very little compression, if any. The print is a tad grainy, but it seems to be the visual aesthetic of the film's intentionally cold cinematography and not added noise from the encode. For the first time ever, Potter gets the transfer he rightfully deserves. But it doesn't end there.
Mixing is just as wonderful, flush with deliciously balanced, active surrounds and hearty bass that add quite a bit of tension to the action set pieces. And dialogue is clean and well mixed, never succumbing to any sort of distortion. While the Potter films have always sounded pretty good, this track seems far more lively and organic, bringing the series to a whole new dramatic level. Extras are quite a bit more thorough than previous releases as well. For starters, on disc one, there's a wonderfully rich Maximum Movie Mode picture-in-picture track, an exclusive to this Blu-ray release. It's a fascinating look at the world of Harry Potter, with interviews with the cast and crew as they walk you through this incredible production. While it's maybe not Warner's best MMM track, it certainly ranks quite high.
Disc one also boasts about 20 minutes worth of Focus Points (five total), which further examine the film's production. Disc one features BD-Live connectivity as well. Hopefully Warner will do another Live-commentary as they did with Half-Blood Prince.
