Madhu, and scenarist, S.N. Swamy, are all smiles, after the hectic work.
Their faces mirror their hopes and confidence, for Keralites have always welcomed the CBI team, whether in real or reel cases. Several records `Nerariyan CBI' is a movie that has several records to its credit, not only in Mollywood, but Kodambakkam and Bollywood too. The director-writer duo K. Madhu and S.N Swamy, and Mammootty are working together for the fourth time to breathe life into the suave, no-nonsense cop, Sethurama Iyer, who has little time for romance. Mukesh as Chacko and Jagathy Sreekumar as Vikram, who formed part of the crack team, are also back. Sethurama Iyer appeared on the scene 17 years ago in `Oru CBI Diary Kurippu' and the same Sethurama Iyer cracks another tough case in `Nerariyan CBI.' Age has been kind to these three characters, who stepped into `Jagratha' from `Oru CBI.'
And from there to `Sethurama Iyer CBI.' And now, comes `Nerariyan.' In all these four whodunit movies, romance is pushed to the background, while intelligence and action come to the fore. There are no songs, something difficult to do away with in a commercial movie.
But the theme music, a hot ring tone today, continues all along into `Nerariyan CBI.' Shyam, who composed the music, has scored the background music for `Nerariyan.' Says Shyam, about the theme music, 'It depicts heroism and it is the tone of success.
The listeners must feel that here is a person who can crack it.' Two other people who have been part of the team are associate director, I. Sasi, and Aroma Mohan, production controller. While Vipin Das cranked the camera in the first two movies, his disciple, Salu George, worked in the last two.
The saga started with S.N. Swamy's story idea. 'While my hero was a Muslim cop, it was Mammooty who suggested that a Brahmin would be a better box office idea. Thus was born Sethurama Iyer,' recalls Swamy.
'You cannot call them part one, two or four because each story does not take off from the other. They are separate stories, murder mysteries, with different story lines. Only, the three investigators remain the same,' explains Madhu. From the point of view of the industry, the first was a hit, the second, `Jagratha,' was a moderate success while the third, `Sethurama Iyer,' was a runaway hit, coming as it did in a lean period, when the industry was going through difficult times. Madhu himself produced the last two, under the banner of Krishna Kripa Productions. Team work The K. Swamy team has done 10 movies together, but in public memory the CBI movies alone stand out.
'What thrills us is that teenagers who saw `CBI Diary Kurippu' are going to see `Nerariyan' with their kids,' says Madhu. Swamy's script for all the four have been carefully crafted, keeping the suspense alive, while creating all kinds of false leads to tantalise viewers. He took one year to finalise the plot of `Nerariyan.' 'Shooting began for all the four movies after the script was written and discussed. I did a lot of research too. There is a supernatural element involved in the murder,' reveals Swamy. Says Mukesh, who portrays the effervescent Chacko, 'At the shooting locations, people keep asking me who the murderer is, after watching some of the shots.
The trick of keeping the suspense alive till the end of the film is a tough job.' Nedumudi Venu, Thilakan, Samvrutha, Gopika, Suja Karthika and Jishnu make up the cast of `Nerariyan CBI.'
